- Check your trailer tires for wear, dry rot and make sure they have the correct amount of air pressure in them and be sure the tread is sufficient and that there are no cracks, bubbles or gouges in the rubber. If your tires are dry rotted, you will need to replace them as soon as possible. Old tires are tired, so replace them and avoid a costly and dangerous blowout. Remember, safety is your number 1 priority. A spare tire is always required in case of a flat or blowout.
- Remove your trailers wheels and hubs, be sure that you inspect the hubs for wear and rough surfaces, turn the drums if necessary.
- Service or replace the wheel bearings. Many breakdowns occur due to neglect in this area. If the wheel bearings have not been maintained on a strict schedule or it has been more than 6 months since they were last checked, please have this done professionally. Travel builds up tremendous heat in bearings and those that have not been properly maintained, can easily causing them to fail. Bearings exposed to salt water are especially vulnerable. Remove bearings; inspect the bearings 7 races for wear. If you replace your wheel bearings, also replace the races and seals. If bearings are OK, re-install them back in the wheel and install new seals.
- Trailers with surge breaks: inspect your trailers brakes and hubs for wear, replace the brakes and turn hubs if necessary, also check the brake fluid level, top up or replace if necessary.
- Check springs, shackles and bushings for wear and corrosion. Replace these trailer parts as necessary.
- Check all your trailer lights. The plug must be in good working condition, turn signals and brake lights are essential they work properly. All marker lights must work properly, repair or replace these as necessary. Check the trailers lights system for proper operation, make sure wires are in good condition. If repairs need to be made, have them done well in advance of your trip to avoid injury and to alert other drivers of your intentions when driving.
